Beatin' the Heat

Totally off topic- I have my camera on my lap in front of my belly and the baby just kicked so hard that it almost fell onto the floor!  Little stinker's already so strong!

After doing weekly posts for so long I feel like I haven't blogged in forever.  We're back to work for the school year, and my students just started this past Tuesday- my morning students that is!  It's been so stinking hot we've been having early dismissals all week, so I haven't had time with my afternoon class yet.  Not that I'm complaining!  It's been kind of nice to ease in to the school year with just one group of kids, because the first week or two is incredibly exhausting, especially when you are T minus 5 weeks from birthing a new chunk-a-munk.  I have really appreciated the extra time with Cailyn, even though she goes down for nap around the time I pick her up.  I've been letting her stay up just a little longer and we even got to nap together today!  Otherwise, this is how we've been spending our early outs together:

Being ornery

Improving some fine motor skills via play doh

Being straight up divas!

Realizing that I can no long see my feet if I look straight down- 35 weeks now!

Trying to spray mommy with the hose....

....and laughing hysterically when she succeeded!

Hope you're staying cool out there!  Have a very happy Labor Day weekend!

Our First Real Family Photos

As we were hanging out with some of our friends the other night, and I was talking about the family photos I had my sister take, it occurred to me that I had never actually posted all of our family photos for you to see!  I don't want to keep such great work by my sister under wraps, so please enjoy!

Most of the shoot consisted of this:

Look at Cailyn's cute expression!  And then there's me and Jerod...

We took zero good photos at this location, and it was the first stop!

This was me doing an impression of Jerod's baseball coach pose- which I looked over mid-session and realized he was doing for our family pictures!

But thankfully, out of the bajillion photos my sis snapped, we were able to snag these:

One of my personal favorites of the three of us

Happy Sunday!

Summer Vacay Dailies: Week 11- the final countdown

Well, tonight we say so long summer vacation and hello to a new school year.  It was a great summer, never long enough, but much appreciated and so valued in the time we were able to spend with our sweet little baby gal before the arrival of her new brother in 8 weeks (give or take some days).

Thursday August 8
We were so productive with having tires replaced on the Durango, grabbing some rock for the flower bed next to the paver sidewalk, pickin'some cherry tomatoes, yelling at our neighbor's obnoxious dog, and purchasing some mums to plant- which conveniently came with a little friend amongst them!  I could be wrong, but my guess was that insect is a katydid...anyone??

 Friday August 9
My August Birchbox arrived early!!  We tackled the actual planting of the flower bed this day, and had another little friend join us- see that cutie patootie white kitty?  I am not a cat person, but kittens are so adorable and he was so well behaved.  Jerod can't stand stray animals and yet they always cuddle up to him!  When Cailyn woke up from her nap she had a chance to play with the kitten and just loved him.  I would have tried to talk Jerod into it if I weren't allergic to cats.  Thankfully, our sweet neighbor and her son had some cat food and took the little guy to the vet (he was really mucus-y) who gave them some meds to cure the rascal's respiratory infection.

 Saturday August 10
I have come to realize that two kids means twice the stuff and we didn't have enough room in the kids' closet to fit all their clothing.  So we bought a new dresser, and....ahhhhhh, it created so much better storage.  We can also double it as a changing table since we never had one with Cailyn!

 Sunday August 11
We met up with Jerod's parents and 3 of his 5 brothers to have lunch in Des Moines.  It was so great to see them and to be able to stop at Sonic for a little pregnancy craving satisfaction via a Cherry Limeade Slushie- YUM!

 Monday August 12
Hobby Lobby had spools of tulle 50% off so I picked up 3 different colors and some elastic and fashioned her a little tutu, which she loves and insisted on wearing to the grocery store that evening over her ladybug dress.  When she's wearing it we often her, "Mommy-Daddy!  I a pin-cess!" (Cue sly little Cailyn smile)  :)

 Tuesday August 13
Since we weren't able to get the Ames wading pool this summer, we decided to let Cailyn run through the sprinkler instead.  She had so much fun, especially when Daddy played with her.  It was a little chilly, and she was shivering with little blue lips, but we had to drag her away!

 Wednesday August 14
For our final day of summer vacation we had a family photo session, which Aunt Amanda so graciously helped out with.  It couldn't have been easy being there with my crabby pregnant self, Jerod the never-ending complainer, and Caliyn the eternal camera-evader, and also having to try to get some good shots in between our bickering.  She took some great shots with our camera, I just wanted to make sure we had a family photo of just the three of us, although it's more like three and a half by now!  We had a special lunch at McDonald's, Cailyn's favorite place to dine- and we didn't even order off the dollar menu either!!  After lunch, girlfriend picked out a Redbox movie to watch after dinner- wouldn't you know...Wreck it Ralph for the third time.  Oh well, I suppose she could have picked something much worse, it's actually a cute movie.  For dessert, we made some brownies in a distant celebration to my little brother's 28th birthday, Happy B-day Bubba!  We love you!

Well folks, until we meet again next summer I will try my darndest to keep this blog up to date at least weekly.  I will also be thinking of some easy DIY projects that could be useful to someone and maybe help us earn a little extra cash while I'm home with the little man on maternity leave.  A nice phone conversation with my Grandma reassured me that it could be possible to supplement a little income doing so- we'll see!  Happy Back to School weeks to everyone!

DIY Reusable Sandwich Pouch

A few years ago I had purchased these Wrap-n-mats online when they were having a deal and we really got our use out of them.  So much so, that that the plastic lining has since become annihilated from being washed, and sometimes accidentally dried in the dryer, and folded and unfolded, etc.  However, I didn't want to spend the money on them again because I couldn't get a deal like I did before and I knew I could make something that would work just as well!  Our local JoAnn's fabric store was having a sale on Home Decor fabrics and had some good coupons I could us, including 40% off an regular-priced item and an extra 25% off my entire purchase when I showed my teacher ID.  So I ended up being able to get material and notions for a great price!

You'll need:        Durable fabric for the outer shell (I used Home Decor fabric)
Rip stop nylon for the inner lining
Hook and loop fastener (also known as Velcro), the kind you sew on, not the sticky kind
Thread to match either your outer shell or your lining, your choice
Sewing machine (you can do it by hand, but oh. my. goodness.  I would not recomment it!)

As I said, I used Home Decor fabric for the outside of my sandwich pouches, and since I wanted the inside lining to wipe down easily, I chose rip-stop nylon.  Bread and snacks can slide in and out easily, too.  I chose white since I knew I would have way more nylon than necessary and it will go with any other color fabric.  I already had white thread so the only other thing I needed was velcro, both hook and loop sides.

I made my own pattern by first measuring some slices of bread- across the width and crust, and then all the way around 2 slices put together- ya know, like a sandwich!  Then I added an inch to both measurements and traced out a template onto some stiff felt I had lyin' around the craft room.  See below.

This is what my patter looked like originally, until I cut out and constructed two pouches, only to find that they barely fit one slice of bread, let alone two!

 Much Better!
My final template measured 14 inches by 7.5 inches, allowing plenty of room for seams and a fold over Velcro flap.

Use the template to cut pieces of your outer fabric and the lining for your pouch

Pin the right sides of each piece together- See below.  I couldn't really tell which side was the "right" side of the nylon, so I just put the smoothest feeling side on the inside facing the print side of my outer fabric.

I sewed both long sides and one short side using a zig zag stitch.  If you want to use a straight stich, it should work fine, but maybe cut your pattern a little wider and longer.  Then, fold the open end's edges inside about a quarter of an inch, pin in place, and use a straight stitch to seal it shut.

Next, add your Velcro.  I put the "hook" piece (or the scratchy side) on one end of the outer layer of fabric so that it wouldn't snag bread when putting sandwiches in or taking them out.  The "loop" piece (or soft side) is attached to the opposite end and on the lining side.  So, if you were to look at your fabric on one side there would be a piece of Velcro attached at the left and if you then flipped it over the other side of fabric would have the other half of Velcro on the right.  Sew the strips in place using a straight stitch and getting as close to the edge of the Velcro as possible.

To form the pouch fold the fabric up so that the lining is on the outside, leave a little room at the top for your flap with your "loop" half of the Velcro.

Notice, my note- the scratchy "hook" piece should be on the inside when you stitch the sides together to form the pouch.

I used the zig zag stitch for this part, too.  I went over it twice and made sure to reinforce the end nearest to the flap since it will be tugged at when pulling the pouch open.

After you're done stitching each side, turn it right side out and enjoy your reusable sandwich/snack pouch!  When you need to clean them, just throw them in the laundry and I would recommend an air dry or low heat.

Price break down:

Home Decor fabric: green, blue print (1/2 yard of each) - $5.50 (JoAnn's Fabrics)
Rip stop nylon (1 yard) - $3.59 (JoAnn's Fabrics)
Hook and loop fastener (Velcro) - $2.23
White all-purpose thread - Already had on hand
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18 pouches = $0.63 per pouch!

Boo.  Yah.

If you check out the website for the Wrap-n-mat, which again are fabulous and do last a long time, you'll see that each one costs $8.99!!  Do I need 18 sandwich pouches?  Probably not, but I guarantee they'll make great homemade gifts for co-workers, family, friends, etc. once the holidays roll around.  I could even sell them for a couple bucks each and still make a little money (which might be necessary given my impending maternity leave and the two weeks of which will be unpaid because I don't have enough time built up).

Sister Photos

So I have a sister who will be a senior this year and a sister who is going to turn her Sweet 16 soon!  My mom asked me to do some photos of each of them, Molly for obvious reasons being a senior, and Kristen wanted a photo to send out on her party invites.  I was, of course, happy to give it a shot and I think we got some keepers.

I took them around town here, and I'm glad for such a rural area because there were some good spots in town and some great ones just outside of town!  Here's a few finished products:

I'm proud of the pictures, the girls look great and we got to have some quality sister time. :)
