Colby's First Photo Sessions + Cailyn (a Mom-Photo-Session Veteran)

Poor kiddo- he has no idea what's to come in the next few years with his mom and her camera.  A total documentation of every seemingly miniscule milestone in his life, from here on out!  First holiday?  *Snap!*  First crooked sort-of-half-smile?  *Snap!*  Running out of the house and away from your bath naked? (Hopefully, not after the age of 5!)  *Snap!*  Looking like a stud in your tux on your way to Senior Prom? *Snap! Snap! Snap! Snap! Snap!*

I realize the last photo I mentioned won't happen for a long time, but doesn't it seem like those events just creep right up on you?!  Until we get there, I'll just try to remember to capture the moments I can, like these first photos:

I'm also ecstatic because I officially have our Christmas cards DONE!  Not sent out yet, of course, but they have already been delivered to us and are ready to be addressed and set aside for mailing out at the beginning of December.  Second year in a row, folks!!

I have a new appreciation for photographers who shoot kids and families- getting two kids to cooperate at the same time is like walking a cow down steps- IMPOSSIBLE.  So instead, I just went with it- this is our life, this is exactly how the photo shoot went: Cailyn hamming it up and Colby screaming his lungs out, ha!

Welcome Little Man!

We are feeling so blessed to have expanded our family with the addition of Colby Mark!  But before I show photos from the hospital- this is the last belly pic I had Jerod take when I was almost 40 weeks, I actually think it was the Tuesday before we had him.  I am amazed at how differently I carried each kiddo.  With Cailyn it looked like I had a beach ball under my shirt, and everything was swollen from my face to my feet.  With Colby, you really couldn't tell I was pregnant until you saw me from the side or the front, which I'm thankful for.  I still gained just as much weight- it was just all right there at my belly!

Colby started his transition to the outside on Sunday, October 6.  I just felt different that day- really uncomfortable, and I must have had a feeling that he was on his way out because I didn't stop moving all day.  I went grocery shopping, cleaned the house, changed the sheets on the beds, finished packing my hospital bag, and just generally kept busy.  I was Facetime-ing with my parents around 4/5:00 when I started feeling contractions, but they were pretty far apart and so I just thought they were false.  As I sat down to work on lesson plans for the week, I noticed them becoming more intense and told Jerod to start timing them.  They quickly went from 20 minutes apart to 7 minutes apart within.  We called our friend, Leah, to hang out at the house with Cailyn until our parents could get there.  By the time she got there and we got out the door, the contractions were only 3 minutes apart- yeah, we weren't really planning on cutting it quite so close!  We got to the hospital and checked in by about 10, my water still hadn't broke, so we gave the okay for the doctor to take care of that and not too long after that, maybe about 30 minutes, they had me start pushing, but the doctor wasn't dressed for the delivery, so then I was being told to STOP pushing- umm, WHAT?!  In case they didn't know, your body just kind of takes control during the birthing process, stopping was not an option! The little guy was literally born after probably about 5 minutes!

It really  is crazy how truly different two children can be.  When Cailyn was born, she came out kicking and screaming, 11 days late, and the only thing that kept her quiet was food or a pacifier!

Colby came out crying, obviously, but after his first feeding was basically asleep for his first 24 hours, and after that only woke up to eat and then go right back to sleep.  He doesn't really like pacifiers, and he'll basically sleep in any position; on his tummy, on his back, in your arms, on your chest, and even propped up on a Boppy pillow during a little photo shoot by mommy.  He's incredibly laid back, to say the least! :)

Cailyn is adjusting as well as any two year old, I suppose.  I'm sure she had no idea what it meant that "Mommy had a baby in her tummy."  Nevertheless, she was interested in him and wanted to hold him every 5 minutes (just for about 20 seconds, and then she was quickly over it until her next request).  Since coming home, she has very much tested every ounce of our patience, and we try to remember all the changes she's gone through in the past couple weeks, and then try to extend what patience we have left.  She's pretty good about Colby, it's other things she's a stinker about- not listening and talking rudely to us, and hitting-ugh.

Both Jerod and I's parents came up to tag team Cailyn and meet their new grandson.  It was a very different visitor experience than with Cailyn, when my whole family, plus Jerod's parents, plus some friends came by the hospital to visit.  This time was much quieter, which was preferred- not that we didn't want visitors, just that I forgot how beat you are after giving birth!

Since we delivered late Sunday night, we only had to stay in the hospital until Tuesday.  That was okay with us, we wanted to be home sooner rather than later.  My plan is to save this "New Arrival" outfit for use with any future children, so that we have a comparative picture of all our kids at 2 days old.  Somewhere around here we have Cailyn's photos from birth, and Colby looks a lot like she did!

Now, we're just at home, Jerod has gone back to work, and I am realizing that two is SO much different than one. Cailyn gets to spend a couple mornings at daycare during the week.  I love having her at home, but I have to run errands at times, too, and she's at the "gimme, gimme" stage- which I'm sure will last until she's about 22 and makes her own money to buy things with.  She loves the friends she has at daycare, so it's a win-win for us both!  We have also had awesome friends who have helped out by bringing over dinner or dessert, or both!  We are incredibly lucky to have such great people in our lives.

I apologize for not posting sooner, I totally underestimated how busy you get with two kids instead of just the one!  I'll try to stay with it a little more and post some birth announcement photos soon.  :)

Wedding Weekend

This past weekend my little brother, Tom, married a beautiful gal, Michelle.  This meant family coming to town, a day off of work, a night in a hotel, lots of driving to/from the Des Moines area, delicious food, and tons of wedding fun!

The ceremony and reception took place in Norwalk, which is just South of Des Moines, and everything was decorated beautifully- simple and elegant.  Michelle's mom is from a huge family and they all pitched in to make it an amazing day for my brother and his new bride.  Their photographer was a relative, her Aunts and cousins made all the food (which was SOOOOO good!), and it was one of the first weddings we'd been to where literally about everyone stuck around all night.  We had so much fun!

Cailyn was the flower girl, and, I tell you folks, I had my doubts.  But, she did just great!  She didn't necessarily walk down the aisle with the ring bearer- it was more of a dash ahead of him- but, she looked adorable and I suppose that's really all that matters when you're a flower girl or a ring bearer, right?

We had some family and old friends make the trip for the event, it was so great to see everyone!  Nothing brings people together like a wedding :)

Twirling is how Cailyn spent most of the day and night, in her, "Pincess dess."

She actually nabbed this cupcake before they officially cut the cake- when a girl's gotta eat, a girl's gotta eat I guess!

This is the happiest I've seen my brother in such a long time.  He found a beautiful person to spend the rest of his life with, and I'm so excited for their future together!

Mother/Son dance, that they had to hug my blubbering pregnant self through- it was like a faucet, I just couldn't turn it off!

My sister, and a couple of Michelle's friends having some fun with the champagne.  Everyone was so welcoming and easy to talk to.

And of course, there was a TON of dancing happening- with much of the music coming from 90's boy bands- which was perfect!

Doesn't she look like she's doing the funky chicken?!

And of course, no wedding is complete without us being coerced into karaoke singing "Love Shack"

I hope you can tell from this picture how much joy these two bring to each other.  Marriage really is something that you have to be committed to, through everything, no matter what.  I think with as much support as they received this weekend, they have a good start, and I pray that they'll be in God's good graces for the rest of their lives together, to help them through those things that make life so difficult.

Congratulations Tom and Michelle!  We love you so much!

DIY: Magnetic Chalkboards

I love me some garage sale-ing in the summer time!  However, beings as I've been super pregnant all summer, I didn't get to do much of it this season.  I was able to make it out to our city -wide sales, though, and scored some new clothes for our soon-to-debut little man and also a few things for our princess.  But, my best purchase was for a set of old metal meal trays, they were selling 12 for ONE DOLLAR!!  Looking back, I should have bought the whole stack- there had to have been at least 50-60 of them there, just so I could have more projects to think of and more junk laying around our house!

I'm pretty sure everyone has seen some variation of this type of metal tray in their lifetime- as long as they were born before the year 1990.  Does seeing this make you a little nostalgic?  I think that may be why I had to have them!

Anyway, while we were errand-running at Lowe's a few weeks ago, I found chalkboard spray paint!  I immediately knew what I could use the metal trays for, and I had all the other supplies at home already, so I didn't need to spend any more money besides the $5.99 for the chalkboard paint.  LOVE it when I can use what I already have on hand!

I started by priming the trays with a metal-friendly primer, I like Valspar and Rustoleum primers.  I use them in white, gray, and black depending on the project.  Obviously, here, I used gray.  I wanted something neutral enough for the color on the frame and the black chalkboard paint to cover well.  As I said, I started priming them- but then my sweet hubby took over for me on the last 10 because it was about a thousand degrees in these parts last week!

I just did the rims and the top of the tray, I didn't worry about the backs.  They were still in good shape, just needed to be wiped down.

A few hours later, I took various colors of spray paint to the outside areas of the tray.  Since the middle was going to be painted with chalkboard paint, I didn't worry about getting paint there.

I waited 24 hours in between spraying on the color and taping.  To make the chalkboard area I just taped off a rectangular-ish area using Frog Tape, which is a variation of painter's tape.

Pardon the change in the color of tray- I forgot to photograph when I taped off the above tray for chalkboard paint.  Forgetfulness is pretty much a given for me lately- but I shall have my brains back eventually...if this kid ever decides to come out...

Next, came a coat (or in some case, two) of chalkboard spray paint.  I sprayed it on in left-to-right lines and then filled in areas that I missed the first time over.

The paint looks splotchy here, but I think that's because I took this photo right after applying it, so it's still wet.

I waited another few hours and removed the Frog Tape to reveal a great product- I can't wait to use them in my preschool classroom, and, of course, to leave a couple at home for our bubba girl!  I should also mention that even though I took the tape off after a few hours, I let the chalkboard paint cure overnight before stacking the trays or trying to write on them- just FYI.

These are the variations of colors that I sprayed on to the trays:

From left to right:

1. Krylon Gloss in Rich Plum
2. Valspar Gloss in Autumn Crush
3. Rustoleum Painter's Touch Satin in Lagoon
4. Rustoleum Gloss in Glossy Fern
5. Rustoleum Painter's Touch Gloss in Colonial Red
6. Valspar Gloss in Mediterranean
7. Valspar Satin in Golden Maize

I have lots of "stuff" sitting in our garage that I won't let JB toss because 'I want to reuse it', and most of it is in the form of old wood from redoing our closet shelves.  I plan on making a mini-series of Upcycling projects- I'm not just reusing this stuff I'm making it better!  Stay tuned for more from: The Upcycling Series!
